Route planner, GPS tracker, Geo-fencing
What does it all mean? I just want to track my vehicles and despatch jobs!
Logistics Management like many other industries is full of buzzwords & lingo so we thought we would try and shed some light on some of the more commonly used terms thanks to our friends at Wikipedia.
Route planning software is a computer software programme, designed to plan a (optimal) route between two geographical locations using a journey planning engine, typically specialised for road networks as a road route planner.
A GPS tracking unit is a device that uses the Global Positioning System to determine the precise location of a vehicle, person, or other asset to which it is attached and to record the position of the asset at regular intervals.
Geo-Fencing - A geo-fence could be dynamically generated—as in a radius around a store or point location. Or a geo-fence can be a predefined set of boundaries, like school attendance zones or neighbourhood boundaries. When the location-aware device of a location-based service (LBS) user enters or exits a geo-fence, the device receives a generated notification. This notification might contain information about the location of the device
Mobile Dispatch is a procedure for assigning employees (workers) or vehicles to customers. Industries that dispatch include taxicabs, couriers, emergency services, as well as home and commercial services such as maid services, plumbing, HVAC, pest control and electricians. With vehicle dispatching, clients are matched to vehicles according to the order in which clients called and the proximity of vehicles to each client's pick-up location.
